WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: Fast & Easy Smoothie Recipes


Smoothies are an easy, healthy way to ensure you're getting enough fruit and veg. in your diet (and all the benefits that come along with fruit and veg). Smoothies are great all the time, for any/everyone: before/after the gym, as a quick breakfast, morning/afternoon/evening snack. Smoothies are also great for kids! It's an easy way to get them to consume fruit and veg., and it's fun for kids to help make them! Plus, you can put whatever you want in them!

It may not seem like a great or appealing idea, but for those of us that live in colder climates, smoothies can be an easy way to ensure we get enough fruit and veg. during the winter. It's so easy to eat bland, meat-and-potatoes type of meals all winter, because they're easy to make and they're warm (bless whoever invented the crock pot, amiright?).

NOTE: Aside from the ones that specifically call for milk, each of these smoothies should have some sort of liquid base. You can use water, coconut water, any kind of juice, or any kind of milk.

You can add ice to chill it (blend it in or just plop some cubes in) if the liquid you add isn't cold enough.

Any ingredient with an asterisk* beside it can be bought fresh or frozen. For banana, I've never seen frozen banana sold in-stores, but you can easily cut and freeze it yourself! You can also buy fresh or frozen spinach (or kale).

NOTE: any smoothie that you add spinach (or other leafy greens) to won't taste like spinach as long as you don't put too much.

TROPICAL SMOOTHIE

○ handful of spinach

○ 1/2 banana*

○ mango*

○ pineapple*

○ kiwi

○ coconut water

BERRY SMOOTHIE

○ raspberries*

○ blueberries*

○ strawberries*

SUNRISE SMOOTHIE

○ raspberries*

○ 1 orange

○ banana*

○ mango*

GREEN MONSTER SMOOTHIE

○ 1 grapefruit

○ pineapple*

○ banana*

○ spinach

STRAWBERRY BANANA YOGURT SMOOTHIE

○ 1 banana

○ strawberries*

○ 1/2 cup of Greek (or your favourite) yogurt

PEANUT BUTTER BANANA SMOOTHIE

○ 1-2 bananas

○ milk (whole, almond, soy, etc.)

○ peanut butter

○ ice

CHOCOLATE BANANA PEANUT BUTTER SMOOTHIE

○ 1 scoop of peanut butter

○ milk (whole, almond, soy, etc.)

○ cocoa powder (as much or as little as you want. I usually add a lot because I'm a chocoholic)

These are just some examples of fast and easy smoothies you can make.

The beauty of smoothies is that you can add literally anything you want! Any fruits, vegetables, waters, juices, yogurts, peanut/almond/other butter. You can also step it up and add things like chia seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseed, and/or protein powder.

You can also make a larger amount and turn it into a smoothie bowl for a meal (great for breakfast or snack). Again, you can add whatever you want AND add whatever toppings you want (chia and hemp seeds, flaxseed, protein, granola, cut up fruit, melted peanut butter, almond butter, etc).
