CRUELTY FREE BUT THEIR PARENT COMPANY IS NOT

This means the brand itself is cruelty free, but they are owned by a larger company/corporation (such as L'Oréal, Kosé, Shiseido, etc.) that is not cruelty free.

For example: Tarte is a cruelty-free brand (that boasts vegan products), meaning: their products are not tested on animals at any point (during or after production) and they are not sold in mainland China (where animal testing is required by law); however, they are owned by Kosé, a brand that is not cruelty free.

This list is organized by Sephora and Ulta, but all product types (such as makeup, skincare, grouped together and not categorized.

OTHER NOTES

How I feel about cruelty-free brands owned by not-cruelty-free parent companies

I wanted to include brands that are owned by larger, not cruelty-free companies because I know for some people, that may change their mind about whether or not to support the brands. For me, it could go either way. I've supported Tarte for a number of years because I truly love their products (not spon but please sponsor me Tarte), and when I found out they're owned by a parent company that isn't cruelty-free, I still continued to support them (though, I was shocked). In terms of all of the other brands on that list, I own hardly any products from those brands (I can probably count on 1 hand). But for me, it went without question to continue supporting Tarte, because I know the products they create and sell do not, at any point, get tested on animals. That, and I've been using a rigorous skincare routine from them that *literally* turned my skin around, so I don't plan to stop supporting them anytime soon.

Whatever brands you choose to support is totally up to you; this is just how I feel about it. It's very easy to find brands that are 100% cruelty-free and whose parent company is also cruelty free.

Kat Von D Beauty

Kat Vond D Beauty is another brand that is cruelty-free, but is owned by a parent company that is not. Now, I'm sure we've all heard the controversy surrounding her and her opinions/choices about not vaccinating her (currently) unborn child. I do have 2 products from her beauty collection that I plan to finish, but I do not plan to support her company any further. I will not buy more of the products when I run out, and if Sephora ever offers KVD products in the free samples whenever I make an order, I will not choose those products. I know a lot of people say 'throw out all your products', and I do understand the symbolism behind that act, but (unfortunately) the company already has my money and I don't want to waste over $60 of my money/of a product. Maybe this information will change how you feel about her and her brand, and maybe it won't. It is still a relatively affordable line that contains really good products (I previously tried a brow pencil that I really liked, and currently have the setting spray and brow pomade that I really enjoy, too), but because of my personal beliefs (well, knowledge and scientific fact...) I just don't feel right supporting her in any way, shape, or form. But you do you, boo! (But, ya know, do the right thing, boo).
